This is general advice on things to take into consideration and what you should avoid when writing your coursework and project.
BASIC ESSAY/ASSIGNMENT STRUCTURE
Introduction • The introduction is used to introduce your topic including your view point and how you will support your view point. • As a general rule for coursework of 1000 to 2000 words, your introduction should be kept to one paragraph. • Avoid starting your introduction with a quote. The introduction should be your own work, not someone else’s. Main body of the coursework • For every opinion, idea, suggestion, fact, you should always be able to support it with evidence, i.e. data, a quote or survey results etc. and that evidence must be referenced. • You should support your arguments with evidence, back up your opinions or points of view with evidence. You should not make a statement without having evidence to support it. • Do not confuse or change your view point. You can write a balanced argument showing difference sides but be consistent. Don’t start your piece arguing for one side then change half way through. • Reference everything. Every quote, diagram, image and every paraphrased passage must be referenced, otherwise it will look like you are trying to pass someone else’s work off as your own which is plagiarism. Conclusion • As a general rule for coursework of 1000 to 2000 words, your conclusion should be kept to one paragraph. • The conclusion is used to summarise your argument. You should not introduce new information into the conclusion.
THINGS TO REMEMBER • While you are gathering information, keep a track of what information you have gathered and from where. • Do not leave referencing until the end. You may think it will be quick and easy but it can often be the most time consuming part of your coursework, if left until the end. If you reference as you go along, you will be less likely to miss a reference and it will be quicker in the long run. • Use the one referencing style. City prefers the Harvard Referencing style • Use the correct tense and be consistent. If you are talking in past tense, don’t change part way through to present tense and vice versa.
