Topical Debate– 27th May 2021The class has been divided into 4 groups for the purpose of this debate. Please checkthe group list to know which group you will be in and your Team members (Group ADay and Group B- Evening).We will have two sets of debates as follows;❖ Group A (in favour of) vs Group B (against)❖ Group C (in favour of) vs Group D (against)The schedule for both debates will be published closer to the 27th May 2021 DebateDay.The Debate Topic is;Consider the statement below and prepare your argument supported by academicresearch and relevant business examples;There is no ethics in business, “the business of a business is business”Step One – Organise• Once in your group, you will be required to work together as a team andresearch for evidence that you will be using to form the basis of your argumentduring this debate.• To win a debate it is important that you research credible evidence to supportyour argument.Step Two – Plan• It is time to plan what you will present in the debate. You need to adhere to theschedule given between now and the Debate Week.• It would be a good idea to assign tasks to different individuals.• What are your key points that your group will be addressing?• Who will be the spokespersons (refer to the Debate structure below)?• Remember it is important to be able to deliver an organised, rationed argumentin support of or against a topic.Step Three – The Debate!• This will take place virtually via Zoom on 27th May 2021 (during the scheduledclass).• Specific times for each debate will be communicated before this date.• Your tutor will act as the chair and guide you through a formal debate with thefollowing rules:✓ The Debate will last no more than 1 hour.✓ Each side will present their opening statements for 10 minutes. The group infavour of the motion always opens the debate.✓ Since this will be a virtual debate it is worth considering the use of effectivepresentation tools such as Power Point Slides.✓ Only the spokesperson(s) may present on behalf of each team.✓ Each side will then have 10 minutes to counter during the rebuttals.✓ Next, there will then be up to 10 minutes of questions from the floor for eachside. Raise your hand if you have a question.✓ The chair will then choose a selection of questions to present to both groups’spokespersons in turn.✓ Finally, everybody will vote in favour or against the motion, or formally abstain.✓ This is a free vote and you do not have to vote according to the group you weredebating for. Ask yourself which argument convinced you more and voteaccordingly.Step Four – Prepare your Individual Debate Report and Reflection Report• The Debate Report will be 1000 words followed by a personal reflection of1000 words.• In the Debate Report, you will summarise your individual contribution to yourteam and the key issues that your team brought forward to support theirposition.• You should also consider the other side of the argument (balanced argument)and include the key issues discussed by the opposite side.• In your Reflection, you will reflect on the key transferable/employability skillsyou have developed as a result of completing this task;✓ Communication skills (both verbal and written – evidenced by thedebate contribution and report writing)✓ ICT skills (evidenced using Microsoft Office programs/virtualdebate, online research etc)✓ Problem Solving skills (evidenced by examples of analysis andinformation gathering, during the debate preparation)✓ Team work skills (evidenced by reflecting on your experienceworking in teams during the task)• This should be supported with evidence and examples.• This will be submitted on 11th June 2021.
