Research Manuscript: Introduction

This week, begin considering what will be the focus of your research manuscript. In addition, begin exploring the possible data sets Students can use any available anonymous secondary data set. Students are not allowed to collect data as this will need IRB approval beforehand.

Example of secondary data sets:

  • Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research

ICPSR maintains a data archive of more than 500,000 files of research in the social sciences. It hosts 16 specialized collections of data in education, aging, criminal justice, substance abuse, terrorism, and other fields.

The data sets available through the (SAMHDA); http://www.icpsr.umich.edu/icpsrweb/SAMHDA/download

You may be able to perform online data analysis from many data sets on the ICPSR Website without downloading files:

See section: “Sources of Data”. “National Public Health Data Sets”. “State and Local Public Health Data Sets”.

You are also free to use any statistical software that you are familiar with. Epi Info is a free statistical software which is available for download from CDC at http://wwwn.cdc.gov/epiinfo/

One of these data sets will be used to complete the manuscript assignment. You are not required to submit any assignment this week. Each application throughout this course is a building block towards the completed manuscript.

Next week, you will submit the Introduction to your study which will include the following:

  • Description of the issue
  • Purpose of the study
  • Significance of the study
  • Provide explanation of secondary data set to be used and provide URL link or other means so instructor can view the data set
