The portrayal of serial killers in television and how it affects law enforcement
Section 1: Overview of the Topic
In this section you should provide a brief summary of the topic you will be examining in this paper. If you are
struggling with finding a topic you may want to consider examining media sources. In this section you should describe
your topic and define all relevant terms and concepts. For example, if you are discussing police shootings, it would be
important to define what is meant by this (i.e. shootings that occur in the line of duty). In addition, if you are interested
in looking at the racial divide surrounding some of these shootings, this is a concept that should be address here. The
goal of this section is to set up what you will be examining for the remainder of the paper This section should consist
of a page and will be worth 30% of your Position Paper grade and will be examined based on the following rubric:
15 points Clarity of Discussion: Was the topic described in a way that made it easy to
understand for the reader?
15 points Completeness of Discussion: Did the summary contain all of the relevant concept
and facts surrounding this topic?
Section 2: Examination of Issues
In this section of the assignment you will examine the topic introduced in section one in greater detail.
Specifically, there are three goals to this section. First, you should discuss why this topic is important. In other words,
you need to make a case for why this topic is worth examining. Second, you should provide at least one recent
example of your topic and discuss why this is an appropriate example. Finally, you should present and summarize any
recent academic research into this topic. For this section you must cite at least three (3) peer-reviewed sources (we will
discuss what this means in class). This section should be between one and two pages and will be worth 40% of your
Application Paper grade and will be examined based on the following rubric:
10 points Clarity of Examination: Was the examination of the theory clear and easy to follow?
10 points Completeness of Examination: Were all of the important concepts of the theory address
in the examination?
10 points Use of Examples: Was a specific example (or examples) used to clarify your topic?
10 points Use of Sources: Were at least three peer review sources used in your examination?
Section 3: Discussion
In the third and final section of this assignment you will briefly discuss what you have learned from doing this
assignment. In about a page you should look back over your work and present a discussion of your major “takeaways”.
Some questions you may want to consider:
• What are your personal opinions about this topic?
• How do you see your topic changing over the next few years?
• How should this topic be addressed in the criminal justice system?
