Assignment 3: Individual Portfolio – Personal Blogs

ASSIGNMENT 3: Hand in deadline via Turnitin – Friday 6th May 2016 by 3.00pm

This coursework requires you to produce a personal blog that should be an ongoing weblog and part of a series of regular, but not necessarily directly related postings.

These blogs should be incorporated into a well-presented portfolio that may include some background/context on the focus of your blogs as well as possible visuals etc. where appropriate.

  1. Task 1 – A series of Personal (Media-related) Blogs: February – May 2016

You are required to produce a regularly updated personal blog on a variety of facets related to the wide-ranging subject of the media and how trends taking place within it may affect society and our culture.  This may relate to specific media platforms, audiences, technology, levels of engagement or perhaps even enragement! In summary, any (broadly UK-grounded) media-related subjects, news, issues, articles etc that you feel may have a bearing on the nature, structure or changing face of our culture/society.

This is your opportunity to voice your views or perhaps air, support or question the views of other media commentators on this broad ranging subject. Your blogs can cover any directly related issues, and events etc. that may influence/affect the future make-up of, and audience engagement with, the media.

Given that you are all studying marketing communications, this should inform and influence the content and themes of some of your blogs but you do not have to approach all of your blogs from such a narrow perspective as long as they are thoughtful, reflective and topically engaging in relation to media issues.

You are expected to produce at least 6 individual blogs, (perhaps two per month, starting in March 2016) each of which should be between 200-750 words with a total word count of 2,500 words as a maximum. You are advised and encouraged to set up your blog on a hosting site eg Blogger etc, although your submissions have to be via Turnitin.

Your blog should be both a personal view as well as a thoughtful and considered reflection of current and on-going media industry debates/issues/news etc. and as such, references (where and where made) should clearly be made to third party sources eg newspaper, website articles, statements, broadcast interviews, extracts from PR journals/texts etc. Furthermore, where appropriate, individual blogs may need to be preceded by a degree of background context which you might wish to provide in the form of a brief introduction etc., given that I will not be able to pick up hyperlinks etc.

These blog tasks are designed to make you more familiar with the range and extent of the media in all its forms (as we have discovered over the course of the module) and its impact and influence on society.  The individual portfolio should also prove to be a very useful tool that should both “sell” your individual capabilities/skills and may even secure you a job within the communications industry at some future stage!

Rubric

This assignment is to be carried out on an individual basis

Although word counts have already been referenced above, any relevant bibliography and appendices (and brief/short background contexts) are acceptable ‘extras’.  Submissions outside the word counts referenced above, or which attempt to subvert length criteria by the creative use of appendices, will be penalised.

Assessment weighting and criteria

This assignment carries an overall 50% module grade weighting.

Your submissions will be assessed against the following criteria:

  • accurate interpretation of required tasks and appropriate response
  • the use of creative and persuasive writing that is grammatically correct
  • evidence of a familiarity with various media platforms/types egg new media, television, print, music etc. and with related current topical issues.
  • document presentation
  • appropriate use of referencing and range of bibliography
