Global Feminism (SEWA India)

Global Feminism (SEWA India)

Your final assignment for this course is to apply the materials from and insights gained in class to an in-depth study of feminism and women’s activism in the country of your choosing. Be clear that you are making an argument about the shape, strength, and focus of the women’s / feminist movement in the country and not on the issues facing women in the country. Also, the paper must present an argument and should not simply be written as a descriptive report about the women’s movement in the country you’ve selected.
Answering the following questions, and thinking about how global feminism would help you figure out how you want to characterize the movement:
1) How does the movement define itself: women, feminist, other, both?
2) What issues seem to be the focus of the movement? Why?
3) How and to what extent does the movement address the complexity of women’s lives and identities? Does it address issues of class, race, ethnicity, caste, religion, and/or sexuality?
5) What is the movement’s relationship to the state? Does it operate independently or are major organizations an extension of the state?
6) In what ways, if any, do organizations seem to participate in transnational feminist networks or activities?
