Sample scenario for alternate assignment 2.
Scenario

The preschool teacher, Janice, walks over and yells, “Stop. The girls continue to yell and fight over the paper. Janice yells “I have had enough”. She rips the paper out of the girls’ hands and throws it away. “If you’re going to be a little brats, nobody gets the purple paper.”
Revised Scenario
Three five year old girls are fighting over a piece of purple construction paper in the art area. I move over to the girls to observe the situation. They begin to yell and rip the paper out of one another’s hands. I say to the girls “there seems to be a problem can I help you?’ The girls continue to yell and fight over the paper. I use an assertive voice and say to the girls “I need you to give the papers to me”. I say to the girls “there seems to be a problem with the piece of purple paper”. I then ask each on to tell me what they think the problem is.

EVALUATE, CONSTRUCT AND REFLECT ON PROSOCIAL GUIDANCE APPROACHES
LENGTH: 2000 Words

ALTERNATE ASSIGNMENT 2 DETAILS
You are required to read the following scenario. Your assignment will be based on this scenario.
Importantly, the age of the child, and the type of educational setting have not been pre-determined.
You are to select an age range (up to 12 years) and either an early childhood setting or school
environment that interests you. Please be sure to state your selection at the beginning of your report.
SCENARIO
[The teacher instructs the children to sit at the front of the room in a group ready to listen to a story
that the teacher will read. During this time, Samuel finds it hard to sit and listen and appears to be
pushing a little with the child sitting next to him. He looks around and begins to sing a song quite
loudly. This continues and then Samuel gets up and leaves the group to walk around the room. The
teacher projects his/her voice across the room and says “Samuel, come back please and stop being
difficult”. Samuel does not respond but continues to walk around the room. This continues with the
teacher asking Samuel two more times to come back to the group. The teacher has now stopped
reading and the children have all turned to look at Samuel. The teacher now asks Samuel to move to
the designated ‘naughty chair’. Samuel refuses the instruction and screams in resistance in a loud
voice. Samuel runs out of the room. The teacher sends out one of the other children to see where
Samuel went. ]
The following components must be incorporated into your report:
- Critically evaluate the guidance strategies associated with the incident.
- Identify and evaluate the behaviour guidance strategies implemented by the teacher and highlight
the strengths and limitations for both the adult and child/children involved in the incident. Explicitly
acknowledge relevant theoretical frameworks and pertinent literature to justify your critique of the
strengths and weaknesses of the approach taken.
- 2. Describe and provide justification for an alternative approach which would be more effective in guiding the child’s prosocial behaviour.
- Your alternative approach may include some of the following aspects: prevention, intervention,
positive relationships, positive communication, understanding the context of the child, organising of
space and time, grouping strategies, interactions and collaborations.
- You must justify why your alternative approach would be more effective in dealing with this
particular incident. Relevant theory and recent research must be incorporated to support your
position.
- You must discuss any ethical and professional issues that are faced in the context of this scenario
and how you have managed them. Such ethical and professional conduct includes: obtaining
parental consent; avoiding biased, stereotyped or generalized remarks regarding children’s
behaviours; avoiding applying negative labels to children’s behaviours and parental or teacher
practices
- Your approach will be guided by one or two models of prosocial guidance (e.g. Choice Theory).
Submit a detailed script outlining your interactions with the child (replacing the teacher’s actions and
responses) using your selected approach as an appendix item. Your report should then refer to this
detailed description to support your assertions.
- 3. Provide a reflection on the development of your own prosocial guidance approach /strategies
based on ONE or TWO models
- Your personal model should relate to a specific theorist (e.g. Rogers) or model (e.g. Choice
Theory).
NOTE: It is likely that your model will be influenced by numerous theorists/theories but for the purpose of this assessment task, you are required to focus on the one or two models/theorists that have
influenced you the most.
- Defend your own model by providing evidence that your ideas are sound, given your experiences
and research for this assessment task.
- Describe how your personal model will inform your professional practice in the future.
- Include implications for your own professional development.
Note: Remember, this is a reflective report and your discussion needs to be critical and evaluative and
should not be descriptive.
Note: Make relevant links to theory and research in your discussion. You should consult recent research (from the last 5 years) and peer-reviewed research articles and scholarly text books. In the assessment folder on vUWS you will find information about how to find peer-reviewed research articles and how to reference using the APA 6th edition referencing style.
Note: You should include an introduction and conclusion in your report. You may use subheadings but avoid using bullet points please. You are able to use first person (e.g. I feel that …) but make sure you use formal academic language.
