Critique of a Quarterly Essay
‘This assignment is designed to help you identify what constitutes professional writing within the essay genre. You will need to choose One of the Quarterly Essay’s set for study in developing an analysis of its topic, key themes, and writing techniques. For example consider the essay’s language choices, register, tone, evidence, argument and structure.’
The Essay I’d like this critique on is “Sex, Freedom and misogyny” by Goldsworthy
Try and limit big slabs of quotes, as there is an 1000 word limit (hence why I didn’t choose 4 pages)
Decide what section or sections of the essay will prove your argument concerning its success/quality or lack thereof as a piece of professional writing.
The body of your essay should focus on a particular section of your chosen essay, which proves your argument about where it works or where it might fall down.
When you quote—and draw from the Quarterly essay itself—make sure it demonstrates a point you are making. Do not let quote speak for you—you need to use them to fit your analysis.
What do they analyse? What is the subject or subjects under discussion? You need to have a good idea about this in providing an overview of what their essay does and deal with this in your introduction.
You need to then decide if their analysis is a successful as piece of professional writing.
