‘SOCIAL, POLITICAL & ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES IN INTERNATIONAL HEALTHCARE’ (HCR4001) ESSAY ASSIGNMENT GUIDELINE FOR STUDENTS (April 2021 submission) *** Follow all instructions below carefully, include all sections listed here and include all keywords highlighted in bold font *** OFFICIAL ARDEN COVER PAGE In the Arden Assessment cover page, under the Assessment Title, students should indicate that this is an Essay. Marking is meant to be anonymous so please only include you student number on the cover page and not your name NOTE: This assignment must be written in the third person. Avoid using the first-person expression such as; ‘I’ (except for the reflective account). This is because pronouns should be generally avoided in academic writing i.e., avoid the use of “I, Me, We, Us”. Also pay attention to requirements to discuss certain terminologies related to SPEII as well as general keywords. TABLE OF CONTENTS Students are expected to add a table of content showing what is covered and page numbers. INTRODUCTION (include only one introduction for all answers) This should explain what the assignment is about and mention the main concepts discussed within the body of the assignment. This part should use up not more than 5% of the total word count. The introduction could include definitions of keywords/concepts relevant to the assignment as well as citations/references. (100-150 words) BODY (includes answers to ALL questions / tasks) TASK A: Outline the key risk factors for CHD (Coronary Heart Disease) and the key features of CHD in terms of aetiology, diagnosis and disease management. Describe how concepts and definitions of health would link with the various stages in the progression of this chronic disease. NOTE: This question requires you to find information about CHD on your own. Try to use journal articles and books when possible and avoid using websites as references. To discuss Task A effectively, students are advised to consider the following: description of what CHD is, describe the main symptoms and include some numbers on global prevalence. How is CHD diagnosed? – Describe what measures are taken to determine whether someone has CHD (e.g. heart function tests, scans?), and what is the criteria to be diagnosed with CHD?What is the aetiology of CHD? Look up some known causes and risk factors (how much do genetic or environmental factors play a role) and describe these. To do this, search for recent research articles or books that talk about causes and risk factors of CHD and summarise these, with citations.Disease management – Describe what kind of treatments there are (e.g. lifestyle changes, medication, surgery) and describe under what circumstances these treatments are appropriate?Health concepts and definitions and link to the types of disease and progression – discuss the meaning of health, how is good or bad health defined, describe some different approaches to defining health, what is chronic disease, and relate all of these points to CHD and the progression of the disease, e.g. how do these concepts relate to the development of CHD, how about different types of CHD (see lesson 1)This list above is not exhaustive and students may wish to explore other ideas not mentioned above. (1,000 words) (30 marks) (LO 1) TASK B: NOTE: first choose ONE developed country and ONE developing country to use to answer the questions below. (i) Discuss the impact of international, economic environmental and political issues on the diagnosis; prevalence and management of CHD in one developed country. (see Lesson 2, 3) Diagnosis (i.e. think about defining or categorising CHD, taking diagnostic measures) – Can you find any international, economic, environmental or political issues in your chosen developed country that could affect diagnosis? E.g. globalisation, access to healthcare services, perception of health, culture, healthcare policy etc. Describe specifically HOW these issues could affect diagnosis, e.g. improve / limit diagnosis. Prevalence (i.e. how many people suffer from CHD) – Can you find any international, economic, environmental or political issues in your chosen developed country that could affect prevalence? E.g. globalisation, access to healthcare services, perception of health, culture, healthcare policy etc. Describe specifically HOW these issues could affect prevalence, e.g. increase / decrease numbers. Disease management (i.e. treatment, availability of treatment, efficacy of treatment) – Can you find any international, economic, environmental or political issues in your chosen developed country that could affect disease management? E.g. globalisation, access to healthcare services, perception of health, culture, healthcare policy etc. Describe specifically HOW these issues could affect disease management, e.g. will it improve or limit disease management. You are not expected to discuss international, economic environmental and political issues for all of the three points, just pick which you think are the most important and would have the biggest impact. (This part should be around 500 words; this assesses LO 2) (ii) Discuss the aetiology and assess the prevalence of CHD in a developing country and one developed country. Report on the diagnosis and management of CHD. Compare the differences between the two countries you have discussed and the approaches they adopted. (see Lessons 3, 4) Discuss the aetiology (causes and risk factors) of CHD that are specific to your chosen developing country, and explain why this cause / risk factor is specific to that country, e.g. poverty, culture, lifestyle, development aid, etc.Include some numbers on the prevalence of CHD (i.e. how many people in your chosen developing country have CHD, and when was this measured).Compare the developing country with the developed country on aetiology and prevalence, and try to think of an explanation for these differences, e.g. the prevalence of CHD may be higher in country A compared to country B because of these factors….Discuss diagnosis and treatment issues of CHD that are specific to the developing and developed and countries you have chosen, and explain why this issue is specific to that country. e.g. can talk about differences in globalisation, access to healthcare services, perception of health, culture, healthcare policy etc. between these countries and how they could affect diagnosis and treatment differently.(This part should be around 500 words; this assesses LO 3) (iii) Discuss the strengths and limitations of Global strategies put forward by organisations such as WHO (World Health Organisation) in addressing the global burden of CHD. (see Lessons 9, 5 and 8) First identify and describe at least one global strategy from WHO that has been created to address the global burden of CHD, e.g. what are the goals, how do they plan to achieve these goals, who is involved (organizations, other stakeholders?) and what do they expect the outcome to be.Discuss the strengths and limitations of the strategy / strategies, e.g. the strategy could do well at improving…because…. However, there may be limitations due to…because… Try to think critically here and it take some initiative to try to come up with your own ideas.(This part should be around 500 words; this assesses LO 4) (Total for TASK B = 1,500 words) (Total for TASK B = 45 marks) TASK C: Write a reflective account on your learning, demonstrating an understanding of the graduate attribute of responsible global citizenship, considering issues such as health equity/inequality, healthcare accessibility and effectiveness of interventions. It is recommended that you use a reflective model such as Gibbs or Kolb to structure your thinking and demonstrate your progression and learning. (see Lessons 4, 6,) First state which reflective model you will be using in your answer. You are free to choose here depending on what you think is most suitable to the context.Briefly describe the model. Then use the model to create your reflective account – go through each stage of the model to reflect on responsible global citizenship.Try to include what does responsible global citizenship mean, why is it important, what are the implications, what could be the effects on people’s health, wellbeing and quality of life, and discuss health inequalities, accessibility and effectiveness of interventions in your reflection (500 words) (20 marks) * A further 5 marks will be added for citations and referencing. * CONCLUSION A conclusion to wrap up the whole assignment should be given. The conclusion should summarise very briefly the main considerations covered across all of your answers. Think about future actions to solve or improve issues or problems presented in the report. (100-150 words) REFERENCES:Students must use the AU Harvard Referencing method in this report. APPENDICES (if needed):Students may place any supplementary information here. This could be a table of data, copies of observation forms or notes, extracts from large documents etc. Study Skills tips for success Self-evaluation questions How do I know I am ready to submit? I have: Self-check list to review before assignment submission Have I covered the main points in all questions in sufficient depth?). Addressed all elements of the questions and opportunities to link my discussion to wider literature.Checked my work to ensure points raised are relevant to the questions asked, contexts provided and expectations setStructured my discussion well and ensured not to jump from one idea to another. I know this because I made good use of connectives to link ideas discussed.Made sure not to include too many points or arguments that are irrelevant. Is my writing analytical in style and questioning in approach?Applied all concepts discussed to a case study and/or Health and Social Care practice, in general, and reached a well-reasoned conclusion.Paid specific attention to the relevant key word(s) guiding the assignment question or task.Ensured the requirement for the key word has been fully addressed in my assignment.Made sure to not just describe what I have read/done and considered the value/significance of the information I included in my discussion. Have I developed and sustained a clear argument throughout my work and supported it with relevant examples?Checked that my supporting arguments flowed in a clear and coherent way.Checked to see if effective paragraphing has been used to organise my arguments and discussion in a logical sequence for my audience.Ensured that use of jargons is kept to a minimum and where used, I have defined or explained the meaning Have I referenced all sources used, in the main body and in the reference list? Used Harvard referencing clearly and accurately throughout my work.Used my own words (in paraphrasing information) as much as possible and where text or information is (quoted) it is presented in quotation marks and clearly referenced following the Arden approach to Harvard.Uploaded a draft copy of my work on Turnitin to review its similarity score, and work on parts of the work showing a high similarity before submission.Checked to see all references used in-text have been added in my reference list.Arranged my reference list alphabetically and checked to see the right assignment is been submitted on iLearn Additional skills related comments –You should demonstrate a high level of organisation by applying a good sequence to your work. This includes checking to ensure your coursework is presented well, using the right spacing, font type, size and cover sheet for your programme. A font type of Arial or Times NewRoman 11-14 is desirable; with the assignment spaced 1.5 centimetre and the sides justified.
