Unit 3.26 Communication Skills for Business Level 3 15 Credits You are going for an interview. In the documentation received with details of the interview time and location, there is an additional document which refers to communication skills. It states: ‘An important skill that you will need for working in this business is the ability to communicate clearly, making sure that the message you send is the same one that is received. This includes written and oral communication. Good communication within our business helps effective working relationships with staff and clients. When our people communicate well and work together as a team, our business is more likely to be efficient and profitable’. At your interview you will be asked to provide the following: a short presentation that demonstrates your knowledge of how businesses communicate (see task 1 below)further evidence that you are able to communicate orally in a competent manner (task 2)evidence that you are able to communicate competently in writing (task 3). NB Evidence for these tasks can be collected as you work through your programme of study. This evidence will need to be clearly signposted. Alternatively, you might like to consider completing parts or all of this assignment parallel to your business and/or marketing assignments. Task 1- Theory of communication Plan and deliver a formal presentation that demonstrates you understand the models, systems and methods of communication. If you are successful in this interview you will need to help our employees apply best practice. See below for details of what should be included. The systems are the range of processes used to communicate with different stakeholders so there is an effective communications system in place.2 Communication methods and technology in businessesA description of the methods used by businesses. An explanation of how technology is used for the different types of communication in a business environment.3. Making communication effectiveAn outline of the principles of effective communication. Include an explanation of the barriers to effective communication giving examples of barriers for different methods. Extension activities: To gain a merit grade your presentation must also: propose solutions to the barriers you covered in section 3use appropriate presentation methods including technology and other aids to present business information orally to the audience identified. To gain a distinction grade you must produce a handout to accompany the presentation which has: an analysis of the effectiveness of communication models and systems used in specific businessesan evaluation of the different uses of technology and how they can enhance or detract from good communication in businesses. Your presentation will be to senior managers. You will be asked questions at the end.LO1, AC 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5, LO 2 AC 2.1 (part and MERIT)), 2.2, 2.3 Task 2 – Oral communication Throughout your interview and your presentation you will be assessed on your communication skills and the interview panel will want to know how you communicate with different people. You are asked to role play a response to an irate customer who has not received the promised delivery having taken holiday from work. Give your response orally to the interview panel. LO2 AC 2.1 (part) Task 3 – Communication in writing At the interview all job applicants need to complete written tasks but you are also able to present information completed prior to the interview. Submit at least 3 of the following: a formal report, a letter, your CV, emails, webpages, leaflets, etc that you have produced. Your evidence should demonstrate that you are able to communicate information using appropriate business styles and methods. Extension activities: To gain a merit grade you must ensure the submitted documentation includes: complex information using different written business styles and methods To gain a distinction grade you must also: use appropriate technology and supporting graphs, diagrams and/or artwork to support complex communication.
