Australia possesses some of the most unique plant species | Reliable Papers

IntroductionAustralia possesses some of the most unique plant species, as they have evolved in isolation. At the same time however, these species have developed in the absence of many different types of pathogens known to effect plants. This means that many of the Australian species have not adapted to become more resistant against many types of pathogens, suggesting that their introduction into the country could produce some particularly devastating effects. vu-• (Summerell, B. A. 2017)During April of 2010 a fungus was detected on eucalypts in a plant nursery in the coastal region of NSW that was previously unknown in Australia (Tobia97/. et al. 2016). It was identified as Myrtle Rust or Austropuccinia psidii (formerly classified as Uredo rangelii & Puccinia psidii ) (Booth,/ & Jovanovic,/ 2012) (Stewart *.et al. 2017) . The name Myrtle rust comes from it effecting plants of the Myrtaceae family(Westaway, J.O. 2016“4– (421,4,-This fungus was originally discovered in Brazil in 1884 on guava plants, and is known to be native to parts of South and Central America. Its invasive spread has also been recorded since its discovery to include both mainland USA and Hawaii, China, Japan, Indonesia and South AfricafWestaway, J. 0. 2016)Rust fungi are parasitic in nature, and can only live on plants that are also alive. Consequent to this fact, plants that become infected with this pathogen will die fairly slowly as the mould relies upon the host for resources. (Yamaoka, Y. 2014). Research conducted by the University of Sunshine Coast indicated that the length of time mortality occurs within infected trees is generally less than four years (Life science Research, 2016). Once the plant dies, the rust fungus only exists on the dead plant material in a resting stage. Although the fungus only acts slowly to kill the host, they have the capability of doing a huge amount of damage economically, as
