You do need to be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding ofprinciples, arguments, processes in outline and conclusions, where present.A question of your assessmentThe essay question: critical evaluation of an AI applicationYou were asked to read the following 3 papers in advance:1. Silver, David, et al. “Mastering the game of Go with deep neural networks and tree search.”Nature 529.7587 (2016): 484-489. This relates to reinforcement learning topic2. Senior, Andrew W., et al. “Improved protein structure prediction using potentials from deeplearning.” Nature 577.7792 (2020): 706-710. This paper relates to structured prediction andneural networks.3. Brown, Tom B., et al. “Language models are few-shot learners.” arXiv preprintarXiv:2005.14165 (2020). This paper relates to language processing.Select one of these papers, indicate its title in your answer and write an essay (aboutone page) comprising:• one paragraph summarising the paper’s contributions and motivations,• one paragraph giving a high-level overview of the methodology used in thepaper,• one or two paragraphs giving your critical assessment of the researchcontributions and AI applications discussed, informed by aspects such as therelated work and conclusions. The following marking criteria are applied:Your essay will be assessed based on the accuracy and clarity of your statements. Inaddition, your essay will be assessed based on the breadth (the variety of issues that youtouch upon) and the depth (how thoughtful and penetrating your comments are) of yourevaluation, and how well you support your arguments. For the breadth you shouldidentify 2 key issues to discuss about the paper’s contributions and motivations for thefirst paragraph, identify 2 key issues to discuss about the high-level methodologies usedin the paper for the second paragraph, and identify 4 key issues to discuss about yourcritical assessment of the research for the third (or third and fourth) paragraph. With regards to the depth, for each discussed key issue in each of the three parts youwill receive:• 0%: answer has no relevance to question• 20%: answer makes some sense but has fundamental flaws• 40%: basic answer showing awareness of intelligent control and/or cognitivesystems and/or AI learning mechanisms• 60%: solid answer based on basic course materials• 80%: strong answer showing very good understanding of the coursematerials and including evidence from suggested and found readings• 100%: exceptionally clear and well written strong answer with sophisticated linksto the course materials and suggested and found readings.
